Located in Victoria’s renowned Alpine – King Valley region, Ian Bates bring a lifelong passion for cattle breeding to the next chapter of Riddellvue — continuing the family legacy through Riddellvue Angus Stud; launched in 2020 and the newly founded Riddellvue Rural Livestock Services.
Ian’s deep connection to the beef industry began early at the original Riddellvue family farm located at the base of Mount Riddell near Healesville.
Established in the early 1970s by Ian’s parents, Jimmy and Irene Bates, Riddellvue initially supplied bulls privately throughout the Acheron and Goulburn Valley regions, building a reputation for reliable, no-fuss Angus cattle bred with purpose. The Riddellvue brand continued in Buxton when the family relocated in the 1980s.
In 2013, Ian joined Anvil Angus — one of Victoria’s leading seedstock operations at the time — as Stud Manager. The experience deepened his understanding of large-scale breeding programs and reignited his ambition to grow Riddellvue Angus into a respected, stand-alone brand.
Ian also travelled to America with HCH Genetics, visiting some of the top Angus operations in the country with these trips opening the door to new dam and sire lines that not only aligned with Riddellvue’s practical breeding philosophy but strengthened it — introducing genetics which have helped shape the predictable, paddock-ready bulls the stud is known for today.
Riddellvue Angus marked a major milestone in 2020 with its first on-property bull sale, now holding up to two sales annually earning a reputation for bulls that consistently meet the mark.
