Located in the renowned Alpine – King Valley regions, Ian Bates, principal, along with his wife, Dahra Chaproniere, bring their passion for cattle breeding and the fulfilment of a dream with the next generation of the Riddellvue Angus stud brand. And with this, the continuation of the Bates’ family legacy of Riddellvue Angus.
The original Riddellvue farm, near Healesville at the base of Mount Riddell, was founded in the early 70’s by Ian’s parents, Jimmy & Irene Bates and provided the inspiration for the Riddellvue name.
Ian’s passion for the beef industry began early in life when the Bates family purchased a new farming property in Buxton in the early 1980’s, and for many years sold bulls privately throughout the Acheron & Goulburn valley regions.
In 2013, a change of direction saw Ian take up the role as Stud Manager for Anvil Angus, one of Victoria’s best breeding operations. This experience inspired Ian to fulfil his dream and he began the next phase of the Riddellvue Angus stud brand.
Several trips with HCH Genetics to leading Angus studs in the US lead Ian to discover new genetic dam and sire lines that would both complement and enhance the Riddellvue breeding principles, and assist the stud to breed the types of bulls that are an asset to both the Riddellvue herds, and those of their clients.
Making it’s mark in 2020, the first Riddellvue Angus on-property bull sale was successfully held in September 2020 and with two sales planned annually, the strength of the Riddellvue brand will continue to grow.
Ian and Dahra sincerely appreciate the support of Livestock Consultants, Willie & Joanne Milne in the ongoing development of the Riddellvue Angus breeding program and stud operations.
“We are putting our own stamp on the breed. As a seedstock producer it’s also a real buzz when your own progeny is putting bulls into the top line up of your sale” – Ian Bates.
Producing phenotypically correct Angus cattle with bred-in predictability and animals who stand up well in the harshest conditions is the mainstay of Riddellvue Angus’ breeding goals and principles.
With our unique sire selection criteria, we aim to provide commercial beef producers with dual purpose, well-bred bulls who will put kilograms into their weaners and breed great female replacements to carry on future breeding in their herds.
